PORTLAND (AP) – The former treasurer for Portland youth football and Bayside Little League stands accused of embezzling more than $46,000.

Edward “Ted” Luebbert Jr. was indicted Wednesday on charges of felony theft for allegedly stealing from the two youth sports organizations. Police say he deposited checks into his personal bank account while serving as acting treasurer in 2006 and 2007.

Defense lawyer J.P. DeGrinney says there was no intent to deprive the organizations of money. He says some money has been paid back. But Portland Police Lt. Anthony Ward says the money never should’ve been put in his personal bank account to begin with.

Luebbert, a former executive with Banknorth Group, was an unsuccessful candidate for the Portland School Committee in 2000.
