LEWISTON – The Lewiston Junior Maineiacs Travel Tier II Squirt hockey team captured the state championship with a 2-1 victory over the Midcoast Junior Black Bears.

Luc Dostie and Kiana Melvin scored goals in the final 3:13 of regulation to secure the come-from-behind triumph.

Lewiston spotted Midcoast a 1-0 lead in the second period when Mark Abreu notched a power-play goal at 7:18. It was Midcoast’s only successful venture in seven tries with the man advantage.

Dostie stuffed home a dish from Cody Woodward to tie the game. Lewiston then fought off a 5-on-3 power play for Midcoast. Melvin flagged down a pass from Jacob Charest on her way out of the penalty box and tucked the puck past goalie Drey Rochette with 45 seconds on the clock.

Rochette finished with 21 saves for Midcoast, which was outshot 23-10. Sam Zashut earned the win in goal for the Jr. Maineiacs.

Lewiston advances to the New England Tier III Squirt sectional championship March 21-23 in Cranston, R.I.
