ORONO (AP) – Maine’s hockey team came up short in its bid to make the Hockey East playoffs.

Travis Ramsey scored 2:20 into overtime Saturday night as Maine beat Massachusetts-Lowell 2-1 to complete a two-game sweep. But Massachusetts clinched the final playoff spot by beating Merrimack.

Maine, which finished ninth in the 10-team league, misses the Hockey East playoffs for the first time since 1996-97 when the team was on probation for NCAA violations.

Massachusetts-Lowell advances to the playoffs with a record of 15-15-4 overall and 10-13-4 in the conference. Maine ends the season with a record of 13-18-3 and 9-15-3.
