WINTHROP – The Winthrop High School 2008 MPA Principal’s Award went to Samuel A. Mullen, son of Patricia O’Brien and Robert Mullen.
Mullen has been active in the school community during all four years of his high school career. He was named as the Williams College Book Award winner his junior year. He is a President’s Education Award winner and was selected this year as Winthrop’s nominee for the Daughters of the American Revolution Award given for citizenship.
Mullen participated in the Youth in Government Program his junior and senior years and was a Boys State participant his junior year. He is serving as a student representative to the Winthrop School Board.
Mullen served as treasurer of the Student Council his sophomore and junior years and is vice president this year. He was asked to serve on the Awareness Committee and has been a member of Maine Youth Voices. Other activities include art and outing clubs.
Mullen has been a member of the Winthrop High School football team all four years and was named an honorary captain of the week his junior and senior years. He is a member of the varsity basketball team and was JV captain his junior year. Other athletic pursuits outside school include tennis and 5K runs.
Mullen has been an employee of Longfellow’s Greenhouse in Manchester since 2005. His post-secondary plan is to major in elementary education, possibly in the University of Maine System.
