RUMFORD – Two local teams will compete in the Mountain Valley Recreational Basketball League finals at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mountain Valley High School.

The River Valley Merchants, formally Morgan Concrete, who finished first and undefeated at 12-0, will host Dan’s Automotive, which upset Dave’s Sauna of South Paris this past week to advance. Dan’s placed third in the league with a 4-8 record. Dave’s Sauna was second at 6-6.

The Merchants are led by perennial MVP Scot New, center Todd Wheeler, point guard Craig Milledge and shooting guard Kevin Gallant. Dan’s is led by veteran Dan Thibeault, forward and captain Mark Cyr, point guard J.T. Taylor and center Rory Dupuis. Although The Merchants won all the regular-season meetings, several of the games were close, with one decided in the closing seconds.

The league will also host a preliminary game to the Harlem Rockets show on Tuesday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m. at MVHS, with the Rockets starting at 7 p.m. In the exhibition, an all-star group will play against a team of recent MVHS graduates and this year’s seniors from the varsity team. Donations to the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams and boosters club are expected to be presented at halftime, along with league awards.

Later this month, the league will host its annual invitational tournament to benefit The American Lung Association of Maine. Sixteen teams are expected the weekend of March 28-30 from recreation leagues throughout central and southern Maine.
