DIXFIELD – The graduating class from Dirigo High School will take a trip down the Kennebec River rapids on the day after graduation on June 7.

The SAD 21 school board Monday approved the Project Graduation trip and buses to transport the graduates to The Forks.

This will be the third year the high school’s graduating class has ended its secondary career with such a trip, Superintendent Tom Ward said. He said virtually all 70 of the graduates are expected to take part in the event.

The class has been raising money for the trip for several years.

In other matters, the board approved a change in the last day of school for nonseniors.

Because of the high number of snow days this year, the district, along with most others, have had to move their last day of school later and later.

As of now, with no additional snow days, SAD 21 students will attend school through June 13. In order to meet state pupil attendance requirements, students will also attend school on March 20 and March 21, originally scheduled as teacher workshop days. Teachers will complete the workshop days at the end of the school year.

If additional snow days are needed, then the district will add attendance days beyond June 13.

If families have already made travel plans for March 20 and March 21, written excuses from parents must be submitted to the appropriate school. Students will be responsible for making up any work that’s missed.

Also on Monday, Ward said the board continued with the development of the 2008-2009 operating budget. He said presentation of a preliminary budget will be ready for review at the next regular board meeting on March 24.

From there, he said, work will begin on paring requests. Personnel needs will be considered on April 14. District voters will act on the budget in May or June.
