CARRABASSETT VALLEY (AP) – Bode Miller fans hoping to see him at the U.S. Alpine Championships this weekend in Maine are going to be out of luck. But America’s other overall World Cup champ, Lindsey Vonn, will be there.
Miller’s agent, Lowell Taub, says the New Hampshire native is going to be cooling his jets in a sunny place after a tough, seven-month season.
Miller has lots of fans in Maine, where he attended Carrabassett Valley Academy down the road from Sugarloaf USA, site of the weekend ski races. Taub says Miller means no sleight to his fans or friends at CVA, but adds that he “deserves some time to relax.”
Vonn and Miller are the first Americans to sweep the overall titles since 1983.
Another no-show will be Ted Ligety, the World Cup giant slalom champion. Ligety injured his thumb and is having it checked out in Colorado.
Wednesday’s downhill training was postponed due to inclement weather. Another practice session is scheduled for Thursday. Competition begins with the FIS downhill at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
