NEWRY – Bethel and Newry firefighters were called to Sunday River Ski Resort on Wednesday morning for a reported structure fire at the Barker Mountain pumphouse.

Sprinklers in the snowmaking facility extinguished the small electrical fire, leaving firefighters the task of ridding the building of smoke, according to resort spokesman Alex Kaufman.

Kaufman said resort officials weren’t making snow, but had started up the system as a matter of routine. A control room operator noticed the fire and contacted authorities at about 9:15 a.m.

Kaufman said the “very smoky” fire broke out on a pump starter mechanism in about a 12-inch area.

The pumphouse facility is located to the right of the Barker Mountain Base Lodge, near Lift No. 1, according to Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Pierce. Besides Bethel and Newry, Greenwood responded with its Cascades system to refill firefighters’ breathing tanks, Pierce said.

There was little damage and the fire didn’t interrupt resort operations, Kaufman said.
