Literacy Volunteers elects new president

FARMINGTON – The Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties board chose Sharron Cornell as new president at a recent meeting.

Cornell has been a literacy tutor for 12 years and on the board for five, serving two years as treasurer. She serves as the General Educational Development tester for Franklin County and the student support coordinator for new students at Franklin County Adult Basic Education. She lives in Farmington and is an avid reader.

The outgoing president, Nana Haines, has been an LV tutor for 13 years and has served as board president for nine years. During her tenure LV received national accreditation by Literacy Volunteers of America.

Haines was instrumental in the adoption of a Junior Literacy Program for middle school students. Hanes is also active in other community organizations, as an officer in the American Legion State Auxiliary and as moderator and treasurer of Phillips Shared Ministry.

She plans to stay on the board and work on the Junior Literacy Program. She lives in Phillips and is an avid reader.
