RUMFORD – A 29-year-old man arrested in January on charges of gross sexual assault of a child has been arrested again, accused of molesting a different child.

James V. Cole Jr. of 7 Riverside Drive in Rumford was arrested Tuesday on three counts of unlawful sexual contact. He previously was arrested Jan. 30 on two counts of gross sexual assault against a girl under the age of 15.

“I had closed out the first case, and then I had a second case come about that was reported to me,” Detective Sgt. Daniel Garbarini said.

Garbarini said Cole was arrested at his parents’ home in Rumford on charges of inappropriately touching a girl under the age of 12. Garbarini said the girl is different from the one involved in the January incident. Garbarini said the contact allegedly occurred throughout the past year in Rumford and Mexico. He said he doesn’t anticipate any more charges against Cole.

“But I should share this with you: I didn’t anticipate this, either,” he said. “I hope there aren’t any more victims there.”

Cole made his initial appearance in Oxford County Superior Court on Thursday before Justice Roland Cole. He was ordered held on $5,000 cash or $10,000 surety bail, with conditions that he have no contact with children under the age of 16 and that he give a blood sample.

Cole remained at the Oxford County Jail on Thursday.
