Over 500 members of the Improved Order of the Red Men of the Reservation of Maine attended the great pow wow in Kora Temple Hall last evening. At 7 o’clock, a line of march was formed and the procession went to Haymarket Square where the degree team of Androscoggin tribe was met. From there the parade went to Auburn where members of the Tecumshe tribe of Auburn and Osceola tribe of Mechanic Falls were met. As the parade marched to the Kora Temple Hall, the streets were illuminated with red fire.

50 years ago, 1958

• Along with the warmest day of spring yesterday, area residents were treated to another sign that spring is definitely here to stay. Cottage owners along Taylor Pond in Auburn reported the ice cover gave up the ghost yesterday afternoon. The exact time the ice went out is listed as 5:27 p.m. Fishermen rejoiced in the glad news, knowing that Lake Auburn could not be far behind.

• The average price for all grades of gasoline fell from $1.30 a gallon in July 1982 to $1.12 last month. It had stood at a record $1.38 in March 1981. But at the end of the first week in April, the average price was $1.16 a gallon.

POLLOCK PINES, Calif. – As a volley of pistol shots echoed in the Sierra Nevada, the first Pony Express rider in 122 years galloped into the mountains Friday, his saddlebags stuffed with mail for communities isolated by a landslide. Malcolm “Mac” McFarland, a 49-year-old California Highway Patrol officer, flourished his Stetson hat and raced from the tiny Pollock Pines Post office with his mochila – special pouches – crammed with 366 pieces of mail.
