RUMFORD – Selectmen are expected to act on whether to ask residents to approve the sale of at least five pieces of municipal property, decide how much to fund the local cable television access channel, and meet behind closed doors on a legal issue when they meet Thursday night, April 17.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.

Town Manager Jim Doar said the town shouldn’t be in the real estate business. To that end, he said several properties, ranging from tiny ones located at Rumford Point and a portion of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Park on Falmouth Street, to a couple of large, land-locked parcels of 54 acres and 133 acres, will be recommended for sale.

The large parcels are located at the end of Franklin Annex and at the rear of St. John’s Cemetery, respectively.

The board will also be asked to recommend granting an easement over town property at the end of High Street for Gary Ball.

Western Valley Access Channel representative Joe Volkernik is expected to ask for a portion of the town’s $34,000 in cable franchise fees.

At the end of the public portion of the meeting, the board and Doar are expected to meet with town lawyer, Tom Carey, to discuss a legal matter. Doar declined to identify the nature of the issue, but did say that a decision is expected following deliberations.

In other matters, Doar will report on the denial of a regionalization grant Rumford and neighboring Mexico had applied for. The board will decide whether to appoint interim fire Chief Richard Coulombe to the positions of fire warden and emergency management director and whether to go out to bid for the purchase of a new grader.
