I would like to make a few comments regarding the story, “New life for Island Point.” (April 16)

The story states Winston Hospitality group will build a 120-room hotel and parking garage. It goes on to say the group could redevelop the Cowan Mill and the Central Maine Power substation. However, at this time, this is only speculation.

The city will do $1.5 million of utility work, plus create a tax increment financing district to refund all the property taxes on the garage – approximately $60,000 per year for 20 years, or $1.2 million.

In return, the city will receive $1 million for the land the hotel is built upon in the fifth year of the agreement. The hotel will generate taxes; the estimated amount, however, was unmentioned. It would seem our city leaders are intent on generously adding to the hospitality’s bottom line.

I would like to know what projected positive effects this development will have on my taxes. Or should I say, just the effect?

I cannot imagine the traffic problems this will create, but apparently this does not seem to be a concern at this time.
