ORONO (AP) – A 44-year-old Orono man who ran unsuccessfully for the Maine House of Representatives four years ago has been charged with attempted gross sexual assault for allegedly soliciting sex from what he thought was a 13-year-old boy.

William Dana Reed was charged after showing up under an Orono bridge to meet who he thought was an Orono Middle School student. Instead, Reed was met by police and arrested.

Middle School Resource Officer Andrew Whitehouse said the student told him last week that a man was making contact with him over the Internet on his MySpace account and asking for sex.

Whitehouse said he then took over the student’s MySpace and Instant Messenger accounts and was contacted Friday by Reed, who arranged for a meeting that day.

Reed ran for a seat in the Maine House of Representatives in 2004 to represent District 19, but lost to Democratic Rep. Emily Cain.
