LEWISTON – May programs have been announced at the Nutrition Center of Maine.

“Eating Well for an Active Body” will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14. Cost is $10.

Debbie Pepper-Dougherty will provide an informational session on how to get the most from the food eaten to reach fitness and performance goals. All ages are welcome.

“Living Gluten Free” will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15. Cost is $12.

Suzanne Dunham, a certified herbalist focusing on nutrition and gluten intolerance, will discuss the basics around eating and cooking gluten free and present a cooking demonstration using simple recipes.

Dunham, has given gluten free presentations and cooking sessions through the Rangeley Health Center, Goose-Eye Institute in Bethel, at the Common Ground Country Fair, Country Kitchen and other venues in Maine.

For those interested in being part of a gluten free support group, the first meeting will follow the workshop.

Lots to Gardens hosts regular teen and adult cooking groups at the Nutrition Center of Maine. Cooking groups include hands-on preparation of healthy meals and snacks, a discussion of a nutrition-related theme as well as basic self-sufficiency lessons such as eating well on a budget.

All Lots to Gardens cooking classes and groups emphasize the use of fruits and vegetables and include fresh produce from the gardens when it is in season. Lots to Gardens also offers a Kids Cooking Club every Monday afternoon at the Lewiston Public Library. For more information on the cooking groups, call 513-3844

The Nutrition Center of Maine is one of the newest health services offered by Sisters of Charity Health System. Located on the corner of Bates and Walnuts streets in the former Wallace School Building, the center provides nutrition-related services for all residents in the community and is a resource for others in the state doing similar work.
