LEWISTON – L/A Arts’ newest visual arts space, the Community Gallery at 221 Lisbon St., will open with the Capital Area Camera Club’s annual invitational photography exhibit from May 14 to June 13.

Titled “Mystical Maine Waters,” the exhibit revolves around Maine’s abundant water sources: streams, ponds, bogs, lakes, rivers, tidal pools, beaches and the Gulf of Maine. Featured photographs include fine art black-and-white traditional prints, digital images and color film prints.

There will be an Artists’ Reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 16. The public is invited.

Membership of the Capital Area Camera Club, established in 1990, includes amateurs, serious hobbyists and professional photographers. For more information on the club, log on to www.capitalareacameraclub.org.

Initially slated for the Turner Center for the Arts, the “Mystical Maine Waters” exhibit was put on hold when the center’s closing was imminent.

“While we were devastated to hear about the Turner Center’s closing, we were thrilled that the camera club called us when they did. We were in the middle of renovating the front office space into the new Community Gallery,” said Cheri Donahue, L/A Arts marketing director. “When the exhibit was described to us, it seemed a perfect fit. It’s a win-win situation, and we’re thrilled to be able to help.”

The new visual arts space was created to offer local artists and craftspeople another outlet for their artwork. L/A Arts also runs Gallery 5 at 49 Lisbon St.; displays artwork in Gritty’s Art & Ale Window at Court and Main streets, Auburn; rotates artwork on the Art & Java Wall and brickwork of the new Willy Beans Bistro and Café, Mill No. 6 on Lincoln Street, Lewiston; and most recently began working with Auburn’s Community Relations and Business Specialist Tracy Steuber to maintain artwork in the foyer of Auburn City Hall.

Besides full exhibits, the Community Gallery will offer a changing selection of locally crafted jewelry and assorted creative offerings.

L/A Arts Community Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with two exceptions: it closes at noon Wednesday and is closed holidays. For more information, visit www.laarts.org or call 782-7228.
