• Nineteen schools participated in the annual contest in French spelling and language which was held yesterday in the Lewiston City Hall under the auspices of the French Speaking Societies. The competition was broadcast over WCOU.

• The weekend in the Twin Cities was cloudy, wet and cold with the low reading Saturday equaling the record low temperature for the date. The mercury failed to pass the 60-degree mark on either Saturday or Sunday and a light rain fell on both days. For Sunday’s date the record temperatures are 87 degrees noted in 1895 and 31 degrees recorded in 1899. For Saturday the records are 82 degrees noted in 1913 and 30 degrees recorded in 1890, 1930 and 1958.

LEWISTON – Continuing vandalism at the Marcotte Park bathhouse, requiring ever more costly repairs, is as mystifying as it is expensive to the city and its taxpayers. The frustration of those who must find the needed dollars to restore the building is understandable. There’s a limit, and it is in sight. The sum of $5,000 had been allocated to undo the damage done by vandals earlier, and even before that work could be done, there was more damage, which will require an additional $3,000 expenditure. The Lewiston Finance Committee, while recommending that the City Council approve the additional funds, was not happy that it found it necessary to do so. As member Denis A. Latulippe put it: “I can’t see continuously plunking dollars into something we know is going to be destroyed.” Area residents whose young people make use of the area have a responsibility to see to it that their own youngsters are aware of the problem, and do not contribute to it.
