SANFORD (AP) – A District Court judge in Sanford has upheld the $1 million bail for a 26-year-old man accused of trying to kill his girlfriend by shooting her three times and then leaving her beside a road in Saco.

Geoffrey Reese, who recently moved to Maine from Texas, made his initial court appearance Monday by video from the York County Jail. Reese is charged with attempted murder in the shooting of 32-year-old Tanya Garza.

Garza, who had been living with Reese in Old Orchard Beach, was listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center.

In arguing for high bail, prosecutors described Reese as “a career criminal with no ties to the state of Maine.”
