FARMINGTON – A special luminaria (candle lantern) ceremony will be held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Franklin County to remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. Luminarias will be lit at Mt. Blue High School’s track at 9 p.m. Friday, June 13, to represent those individuals.

“It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Colleen Bate, event chairwoman. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.”

Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria may do so by contacting the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members will gather with tents and sleeping bags to join more than 4,800 communities nationwide that are hosting relays.

Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, religious groups…people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the relay, all with the goal of raising funds to help eliminate cancer.

Franklin County’s cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will kick off the Relay For Life at 6 p.m. June 13 with the official survivors’ lap; then the rest of the participants will join.
