RUMFORD – Several events to honor veterans on Memorial Day in Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield will begin Monday morning.

At Greenwood Cemetery on Weld Road in Dixfield, the annual service sponsored by the Swasey-Torrey American Legion Post 100 will be held at 9 a.m.

Members of the Dirigo high and middle school bands will supply patriotic music, while Selectman Brad Dyer will give the keynote address. At approximately 9:30 a.m., those attending the Dixfield service, as well as members of American Legion Post 199 in Peru will march to the Peru/Mexico Bridge, where a wreath honoring service people lost at sea will be tossed into the Androscoggin River.

Prior to the service, Post 100 Commander Marcel Martineau said a wreath will be laid at the Riverside Cemetery on Canton Point Road.

In Rumford, parade participants will line up on Railroad Street at 10 a.m. From there, participants will cross onto Congress Street, then go on to the rotary where a wreath will be laid at the memorial, and past commander of the Maine State American Legion, Ed Roach Jr., will speak.

The parade marshal is former prisoner of war John Wyman.

Band members from Mountain Valley High School and singers from the Rumford Association for the Advancement of the Performing Arts will perform patriotic music.

Parade participants include the high school band, the Snowshoe Club Drum and Fife Corps, Boy and Girl Scouts, several veterans’ groups and civic clubs, the Legion Riders, antique automobiles, and the girls’ gymnastics team from the Greater Rumford Community Center.

Most of the parade will proceed down Rumford Avenue to Waldo Street and Lincoln Avenue, then cross into Mexico where a similar service will be held at the Mexico Greens.

American Legion Post 24 Commander Kirk Thurston said prior to the start of the parade, wreaths will be laid at Veterans’ Park at the end of Congress Street, and at the Civil War Memorial in Rumford Center.

Following the parade, young participants are invited to the American Legion Hall on Congress Street for snacks. Adults are invited to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Waldo Street for refreshments.

Thurston said a display of veterans’ memorabilia will be on exhibit at the American Legion Hall.
