BOWDOINHAM – Merrymeeting Arts Center will celebrate its first year and kick off its membership drive from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the waterfront. Children and adults will be able to participate in free art projects.

Attendees are urged to bring their own hat creations or to gather at 2 p.m. at the gazebo at Philip Mailly Riverfront Park to make paper-bag hats. At 2:30 p.m., there will be a parade of hats. There will also be a family dance at the end of the afternoon.

Founded in 2007, the MAC, a regional community arts organization, promotes whimsy, environmental consciousness and diversity through its artists, programs and projects. In the nine months since opening, MAC has hosted four gallery shows featuring area artists.

Brycework Museum, the gallery and the shop at Merrymeeting Arts Center will be open for the event. The current show in the main gallery is “Young at Art,” an exhibit of works by artists under 18. There will be light refreshments in the gallery.

The art center, open Fridays and Saturdays, is staffed by volunteers.
