GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Detective John Gates investigated a dog bite complaint Monday. He had a court order for the dog owner to show cause why the animal should not be destroyed. The owner wasn’t home. The dog was. Gates was treated at a hospital for bites on the leg.

LONDON – Rock singer Screaming Lord Sutch, representing the Monster Raving Looney Party, pulled 235 votes in Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s parliamentary district in Britain’s general elections. His proposals to bring back the village idiot and replace road tax with gasoline tax won him 0.6 percent of the votes in Finchley in Thursday’s voting, compared to his Tory opponent who retained the seat with 51 percent.

• Baby Boomers, ranging in age from 29 to 39, are starting their own businesses in increasing numbers, according to a magazine report, because there are not enough middle-management positions in corporations for them. “During the 1980s, the number of middle management jobs will rise by only 19.1 percent,” says Carl Bergen, editor-in-chief of Venture Magazine. “Yet the number of men and women between the ages of 35 and 44 will increase by 42 percent.

“Those people who want to control their own destiny – with emotional and financial rewards – will start their own businesses,” he adds.
