PARIS – The bail for a man accused of stabbing a Norway man on Monday night remained the same after his initial appearance before a judge Wednesday.
Steven Ray Piirainen, 46, of 256 Coldwater Brook Road in Oxford, is charged with one count of elevated aggravated assault. Judge Paul Cote determined that Piirainen’s bail should remain at $75,000 cash or $150,000 surety after Piirainen’s initial appearance in 11th District Court in Paris.
Cote also set bail conditions that Piirainen must not use alcohol or illegal drugs, must not possess firearms or dangerous weapons, must have no contact with the 44-year-old man who was stabbed and must not go near the vicinity of 9 King St., where the incident occurred.
Piirainen is accused of attacking Steven Toothaker of Oxford in the hallway of the King Street building after asking Toothaker for money. According to a report by Sgt. James Ventresca of the Norway Police Department, Toothaker said he initially thought Piirainen was punching him until he saw that he was bleeding.
Toothaker was stabbed five times in the neck, shoulder, arm and abdomen, and walked to nearby Stephens Memorial Hospital. He was listed as a patient at Central Maine Medical Center on Tuesday, but had been released by Wednesday afternoon. Toothaker declined comment on the incident when reached by telephone Tuesday.
Norway police Chief Robert Federico said none of the injuries was life-threatening.
Piirainen was arrested after he was found at the Ryerson Hill address. Ventresca said Tuesday night that no weapon was recovered after the incident. Piirainen remained at the Oxford County Jail on Wednesday.
