WINSLOW (AP) – The federal Labor Department has fined a Winslow ice cream shop owner $1,500 for having an inoperable latch on its walk-in freezer where an employee got trapped for four hours.

Jeff Shain, the owner of Smiley’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, has until July 3 to contest the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s citation.

According to OSHA, 21-year-old Heather Morin of Oakland was taking inventory May 24 when she got locked in the freezer, where the temperature was 10 below zero. When Morin was found four hours later, she told co-workers she was so cold she thought she was going to die.

She was treated and released at a hospital.
