BANGOR (AP) – A U.S. bankruptcy judge is allowing Red Shield Environmental LLC and RSE Pulp & Chemical LLC to take a loan advance to pay workers and health care premiums.

The first paychecks are for the pay period ending June 15 and total about $226,000 for 190 people employed at the mill. By the pay period ending June 29, that number had been reduced to 28 workers remaining on site to maintain the facility during bankruptcy proceedings.

Red Shield purchased the former Georgia-Pacific Corp. paper mill in 2006 and brought in RSE Pulp to operate the mill. Both companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last weekend.
