To the County Commissioners of Androscoggin County: We the undersigned, being citizens of Lewiston, respectfully request that your honorable board will cause Main Street, Lewiston, from Mountain Avenue to the watering trough in Hospital Square, being a County road leading from Lewiston to Greene, to be altered, graded and put in passable condition, and to that end, it is our judgment that the street railway rails should be raised in order that the street will be properly crowned and drained, and that said street should be macadamized after said rails have been raised.

(Signed) C.J. Barker and 84 others.

The installation of water meters in newly built Auburn homes was inaugurated this year by the Auburn Water District, and about 12 new homes have been metered so far.

A district official said the metering was begun this year to see how the system works out, and with the contemplation that all buildings may be metered in the future.

The meter system works the same as those used by other public utilities. The meter is read each quarter of the year, and bills are sent out quarterly. Most Auburn water users now pay a flat rate of $10 each year. There is, however, a surcharge during the summer when outside silcocks are put in use.

Lewiston’s post 22 got a fine pitching performance from Dan Howaniec Monday night on the way to a 2-1 Legion baseball win over host Westbrook. Hawaniec scattered five hits in the game, walking only one and striking out eight. Westbrook pitcher Bill Call also had a good game, yielding only three base hits and two walks.

Lewiston went ahead in the fourth inning when, with one out, Kevin Kelly walked, John McCarthy singled to put runners at first and third and Vinnie Palange followed with a sacrifice fly. Lewiston added what proved to be the game winner in the fifth as Ray Charest led off with a walk, Howaniec bunted the runner to second, and one out later, Dave White singled. An infield error on White’s single enabled the run to score. Lewiston is 8-4.
