RUMFORD – The fourth and final week of the Rumford Public Library’s Summer Fest program began with a pet show on Monday. All entrants received recognition.

Amy Breton and Jessica Carrier will return to the library with “Caterpillar Capers” on Tuesday, July 29. Both, elementary school teachers, will share some of their favorite caterpillar books, followed by theme-related crafts.

The summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” will conclude with the Summer Reading Awards Celebration on Wednesday, July 30, for those readers who completed at least one week of the four-week program.

Many local children participated in the program, logging several hours of reading while earning coupons, Sea Dogs tickets, and special reading program T-shirts. Refreshments will be served and the presentation of the final certificates and incentives made.

Children are asked to wear their “Catch the Reading Bug” T-shirts to the celebration. Those unable to attend the celebration may pick up their certificates any day after Wednesday.

The library’s children’s theater group has been preparing since early June for the Thursday, July 31, presentation of “Re-Elect Prince Charming.” The show, a funny political thriller, was written by Nancy O. DeMilner Demings especially for the library’s summer program.

Major roles will be performed by Chelsea DeRoehn, Nathan Fitzpatrick, Melissa Frank, Addy Gorham, Ciara Keene, Lea Nolette, Morgan O’Neil-Gordon, Noah Tanguay-Collins, Christa Vattes, Cam Welch, Brooke Young and Erich Zurhorst.

The cast also includes several other young actors, who appear as townspeople or as members of the town chorus or Unicorn Chorus. Many of the cast members are veteran children’s theater performers, while several of the younger children are new to the program this year.

The show will be performed at Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico. The matinee show will begin at 3 p.m., with an evening performance at 6:30. The shows are free for all ages.

The final Picnic in the Park will be the annual Teddy Bear Picnic presented by Sue Bousquet and Stacey Holman at noon Friday, Aug. 1.

Weather permitting, those attending will gather under the trees on the back lawn of the library. If rainy, they will move the picnic inside. Bring a lunch, a picnic blanket and a favorite bear.

All programs are free and open to area children and their friends. Parents and other caregivers are welcome and are encouraged to accompany younger children. The programs are held in the library’s public room at 3 p.m., with the exception of the Friday noontime picnic in the park.
