Maine is a great place to be physically active. What’s great is that, not only do you get to enjoy Maine’s beaches, lakes, trails and mountains, but it’s good for you, too!

Regular physical activity promotes health and well-being and reduces the risk of becoming overweight and obese and developing many chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some cancers. It can help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight – it just makes you feel good!

Adults should be moderately active, such as taking a brisk walk for 30 or more minutes on most days of the week. This can even be accumulated in short spurts of physical activity, 10 minutes at a time. Youth should be active 60 or more minutes per day, with some of that activity being vigorous (makes you sweat or breathe hard).

Walking is a safe and fun physical activity. Walking requires little or no equipment and can be enjoyed by most individuals, regardless of their athletic abilities.

Healthy Maine Walks provides a Web site listing the walking routes in your area. Is it too cold for you or raining? Look through the indoor walking routes found their site. For each route, you’ll find information such as hours of operation, allowed uses, ADA accessibility and driving and parking directions.
