A musical program presented by the Poland Spring Orchestra entertained members of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club Monday noon at the Dewitt Hotel. The orchestra, conducted by John West, was accompanied by a double quartet. J. W. Gitt spoke briefly on the Amish religion in Pennsylvania.

ORONO-The university of Maine at Orono will be abuzz with beekeepers this week as 700 people from 14 states and Eastern Canada attend the annual convention of the Eastern Apicultural Society. The convention, which begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday, includes presentations by leading entomologists from across the nation. Topics will range from wintering bees in the frozen North and the problem of bear damage to bee venom collection and beeswax candle-making. Thursday’s schedule includes a “bee beard” competition in which a half dozen competitors don a cluster of 1,000 live bees around their chin and neck.

• Auburn Commons is one of the 15 buildings in the state which have been awarded energy efficiency certificates from the Maine Office of Energy Resources. Financed by the Maine State Housing Authority, the honored apartment buildings meet or exceed the state’s voluntary energy standards. “The energy saved by the design of these new or substantially rehabilitated apartments is significant,” OER Director John Kerry said. The certificates will be sent to the apartments honored by the OER. The 15 buildings represent a total of 464 apartment units.
