AUBURN – Auburn Running Club recently completed a successful season by placing third out of 32 teams at the Maine Junior Olympic State Track and Field Championship. Poland won the meet, followed by Windham, with Scarborough and Old Town rounding out the top five positions.

The Auburn girls’ team placed second overall, while the 9 and 10-year-old girls won their division. The boys placed fifth among the teams competing. Auburn’s individual winners were Brooks Layman, shot put; Emma Byrne, long jump; Nathanial Hernandez, high jump; Caleb Yarnevich, turbo javelin; Spencer Dunn and Morgan Knowlton, 800-meter racewalk; and Nicole Court-Menendez, 1,500 racewalk. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams in the 4×100 relay also earned gold medals.

This is the 12th year in a row that Auburn has finished among the top three teams, winning the meet seven times. Tom Menendez has directed the program for 15 years, assisted by a large group of dedicated volunteers. The track program with over 100 participants is sponsored by Auburn Parks and Recreation.
