Twenty-two ladies chapeaux were the innocent cause of an altercation between the Empire Novelty Company of Broadway in Manhattan and Mr. A. Singer, proprietor of “The Fashion” of Lisbon Street, Lewiston, which ended in the Auburn municipal court Friday morning and in favor of Mr. Singer.

In the first place the hats were twenty-two, when they should have been eleven. Then again some of them had plain crowns with little insignificant pompoms when they should have had draped poufs, and big luxurious pompoms. Some which had been ordered with all velvet trimming came covered with silk, and heaven knows you can’t sell silk on winter hats in Maine.

Judge Manzer decided after the testimony that the goods delivered were not the goods ordered and expected, and Mr. Singer will have to pay only $14.40.

Androscoggin Sheriffs Office deputies were busy this past weekend with a number of calls of an unusual nature involving juveniles. On Sunday morning at 12:39 a.m., they received a call from Circle Elektric in Turner complaining that there was a man who had rolled his car and was acting strangely, according to Deputy Ricci Brown.

Deputy Brown responded and found the car on the Potato Road, off Route 4, and continued on to Lower Street where he discovered the 17-year-old juvenile in the middle of the road, jumping around and screaming, Brown said. The young man was taken to Androscoggin County Jail.

On Sunday at 5:56 p.m., the department was called to handle a juvenile at New Beginnings in Greene who was making verbal threats. Upon the arrival of deputies Brown and Daryl Farris, the juvenile ran. He was apprehended with the help of neighbors a few minutes later. He was charged with reckless conduct.
