If the electric road wishes to do something real nice it might have the signs on the cars illuminated at night, to save the bother of stopping every car until you get the right one. Visitors, while finding the car service satisfactory, often comment on this feature.

• The city of Auburn is advertising for bids on the construction of the first stretch of state road ever built in the city. The section to be built will be about 216 feet long. The amount available this year for state roads is something over $2,000.

50 years ago, 1958

Lewiston’s school buses are greased up and ready to roll with the start of classes tomorrow morning. Israel Winner, proprietor of Lewiston Transportation Co., reports everything is in readiness for the new school year. He said he will meet this afternoon with school bus drivers to instruct them in their duties.

The school bus fleet includes a dozen 60-passenger buses, two 54-passenger units and a 24-passenger vehicle. Winner described the vehicles as being “in tip-top shape.”

25 years ago, 1983

Three Lewiston residents are among Maine’s mid-year leaders in seven state races for championship medals at the American Contract Bridge League. They are Dr. S.D. Rosenblatt, master, 21 points; Eileen Rosenblatt, senior master, 39 points; and Rosemarie V. Goodwin, advanced senior master, 38 points.

ACBL Executive Secretary Richard L. Goldberg said the 200,000 card-playing members of the league are ranked in seven classes by master points won before last Jan 1. State-championship medals will be awarded winners in each class.
