AUGUSTA – The Concerts at Jewett Series will present Muriel Havenstein, Maine’s first lady of jazz, Friday, Sept. 19, at Jewett Hall Auditorium. Also performing at the 7:30 p.m. concert will be John Hunter on bass, Ralph Norris on sax and Gary Gemmiti on drums.

This legendary jazz/swing pianist celebrated her 85th birthday at a sold-out Boothbay Opera House concert in May, receiving a standing ovation just three tunes into the first set.

The Maine State Legislature and the Maine Jazz Alliance recently presented Havenstein with commendations for her lifelong contributions to the world of America’s original art form.

Sometimes fondly referred to as “The Midcoast Monster,” Havenstein dropped out of a Bronx high school to join the all-girl jazz group Estelle and Her Brunettes. After a 25-year hiatus to marry and raise children, she moved to Maine and got back to playing jazz and swing.

Tickets are $10, $5 for students; children 12 and younger, free. Tickets are available at Pat’s Pizza in Augusta, Apple Valley Books in Winthrop, Al Corey Music Center in Waterville, and at the door. Call 621-3551, or e-mail umasc@maine.edu for more information or for mail-order tickets.
