PARIS – Maine Veterans’ Home will host the annual POW-MIA service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. The presentation is co-sponsored by the facility and Western Maine Veterans’ Advisory Committee as a tribute to those soldiers who were imprisoned and those who never returned to their country and loved ones.
“This service gives our facility an opportunity to pay our respects to our residents who served as POWs, as well as to those in the community, and all those soldiers who have never been accounted for,” said Joel Dutton, administrator of the 90-bed facility.
The program will feature Anthony G. Jordan of Augusta as the guest speaker. Jordan is a member of the Bradford-Sortwell-Wright Post 54, American Legion, Wiscasset. He served as department commander of the American Legion of Maine in 1979. He was elected as the national commander of the American Legion at the national convention at Orlando in 1997.
The ceremony will include the names of each missing Vietnam soldier being read aloud while a candle is lit in their honor. Music, prayers and the customary empty table will also be included in the program.
“The table, set for one, is small, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or her suppressors. Each item on the table has significance in the ceremony and is explained as the candles are lit,” said Joe Cooney, committee chairman.
The public is invited, and tours of the facility will be available at the conclusion of the service. The facility, located at 477 High St., provides rehabilitation, long-term, dementia and residential levels of care.
