NORWAY – Local singers are invited to try their hand at barbershop singing at two guest nights being held this month.

The Hillsmen Barbershop Chorus will hold guest nights Sept. 15 and 22 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Registration begins at 6 on both nights, and the event will run until 9.

Registration is free and open to all men, and the events will be followed by light refreshments.

The barbershop group has been around for more than 30 years. Chorus member Arnold Jordan said the group is looking for new members and has sporadically invited the public to instructional courses.

“One year we ran four weeks of singing lessons,” he said. “This year we’re just trying the two guest nights and hoping that will convince guys to come back and sing with us.”

Jordan said the guest nights will include an “informal screening” by chorus director Pat Fleck to determine where participants fit into the four part scale. Newcomers will then be taught a song and a tag, or repeat ending of a song, before the Hillsmen will sing about four songs to demonstrate their style of singing.

The Hillsmen regularly meet at the St. Catherine’s church on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. The Mollyockett Chorus, a women’s barbershop group, meets Tuesdays at the same time at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oxford. Jordan said the Mollyockett Chorus will also be holding guest nights Sept. 23 and 30.

For more information, contact Jordan during the day at 875-3202, or Pat Fleck at 647-5005 or Tere Porter at 743-0656 during the evening.
