LEWISTON – Kirsten Walter has been named director of the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Maine. The Nutrition Center is home to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry, St. Mary’s Lots to Gardens Program and the demonstration kitchen. The center is located at 208 Bates St. in Lewiston in the old Wallace School Building.

The programs at the center work together to combat food insecurity through food access and distribution projects as well as urban community gardens. The center also provides nutrition education and cooking classes as a means of promoting healthy lifestyles.

Walter is the founder of the St. Mary’s Lots to Gardens program. As a Bates College student, and with the support of St. Mary’s Health System, she turned a trash-filled lot on Knox Street into a beautiful green space where flowers and vegetables now flourish. In nearly a decade, 14 additional community gardens throughout Lewiston have been created under her leadership.
