SCARBOROUGH – Residents of Scarborough may be asked to decide whether the local high school sports teams should again be known as the Redskins.

Many American Indian groups find that name offensive, and seven years ago the town Board of Education adopted the current name, Red Storm. Residents who want to see the name go back to Redskins have been circulating a petition to put the issue on the ballot.

The Town Council is expected to decide this week to send the matter to voters, ending the need to collect signatures.

Chairman Jeffrey Messer says four of the seven councilors have signed on as co-sponsors of the ballot proposal, and he’s sure it will appear on the ballot.
