BANGOR (AP) – Maine’s 2008 moose season is now under way, with 1,133 permit-holders eligible to take part in the first of three sessions.

The first week of moose hunting is limited to designated Wildlife Management Districts in northern and northeastern Maine. The second session, from Oct. 13-18, will be expanded to additional districts and accommodate 1,747 hunters.

A limited November hunt will be held for the first time in more southerly districts. Open to 135 permit-holders, it will run for nearly the entire month.

The 3,015 hunters were chosen by the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife in its annual lottery. About 75 to 80 percent of hunters typically succeed in taking a moose.
