MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) – A suburban New York police commissioner says it’s a miracle that a baby escaped injury when his father was gunned down while holding him.

Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong says that several shots were fired on Sunday as Hassan Green-Cane walked out of his home with 1-year-old Hassan Jr. in his arms.

Says the commissioner: “My God, with all the bullets they sprayed at this guy, I am astonished the baby didn’t get hit.”

The mortally wounded man stumbled back inside, handed the baby to his sister and collapsed.

Chong says it’s believed that Green-Cane was the intended target.
