PORTLAND – The Portland Symphony Orchestra will open its popular Pops! series Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12. The concerts, a tribute to composer John Williams, will feature memorable classics from such well-known films as “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park” and “Star Wars.”

Members of the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars fan club, will enhance Williams’ Star Wars Suite with their costumed participation as Storm Troopers, R2D2, C3PO and other familiar characters from the “Star Wars” films.

The concert will open with highlights from “Jurassic Park,” followed by “Somewhere in My Memory” from “Home Alone.” PSO Concertmaster Charles Dimmick will play the violin during the moving theme song from “Schindler’s List.” Other highlights of this cinematic musical concert include the “Hymn to the Fallen” from “Saving Private Ryan,” the theme from “Superman” and “Raiders March” from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

The Saturday concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium; the Sunday performance will be at 2:30 p.m.

Robert Moody, new music director of the PSO, will conduct.

Featured will be members of the Choral Art Society, University of Southern Maine Chamber Singers and Saco Bay Children’s Choir.
