AUBURN – A local woman was sliced with a broken beer bottle Wednesday and another was arrested after an early-morning fracas on Court Street.
Sarah Baril, 28, said she was sliced in the face, chest, back and legs at about 1 a.m. when she tried to break up a couple fighting outside her home.
Police said they found Baril suffering from multiple wounds that required 25 stitches to close.
Misty Dawn Romero, 31, of 387 Court St. was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail.
Baril said she and Romero were neighbors who occasionally hung around together. They had seen each other Tuesday night but Baril said when she tried to stop Romero and her husband from fighting early Wednesday morning, things turned violent.
“They were fighting and beating each other up,” Baril said. “I tried to stop that and she came at me. She broke a beer bottle and stabbed me. It was totally out of nowhere.”
Back at home Wednesday night after she was treated at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Baril said she first suffered a long gash to her face as the broken bottle was swiped at her head.
Next came slashes toward her chest and legs and at her back when she tried to get away.
“All of a sudden, I realized, ‘I’m bleeding. I might be dying,'” Baril said.
Baril will return to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center to consult with a plastic surgeon about the damage to her face, she said.
She said she got to know Romero and her husband after they moved to the neighborhood when fire burned them out of their apartment on Summer Street.
During that fire on Aug. 13, Romero fled her apartment at 85 Summer St. with her 9-month-old child and three other children. Investigators later said the blaze was the result of either a discarded cigarette or a candle left burning.
Baril said she and others in the Court Street neighborhood had helped the Romero family as they got settled into their new home.
By Wednesday night, Romero was freed from the county jail on bail, ordered to return to court at a later date to answer the assault charge.
