LEWISTON – The band Bustopher Jones will provide the music for an evening of contra dancing at the Lewiston Public Library Friday, Oct. 10. Leading the dances will be caller Chrissy Fowler of Belfast.

“Chrissy is experienced at teaching people of all ages and abilities,” said LPL cultural coordinator Cindy Larock, adding, “No prior dance experience is necessary to participate, and people are invited to come with or without partners as the custom is to mix and mingle throughout the evening.”

“The dancing itself is fun and provides a good aerobic workout. Comfortable, casual clothing and footwear are recommended, and the more experienced contra dancers typically bring jugs of water with them to keep themselves hydrated during the evening,” Larock said.

The musical repertoire will consist of French-Canadian reels, Scottish jigs, Irish hornpipes and the occasional waltz, performed by Greg Boardman of Auburn on fiddle; John Cote of Lewiston on guitar and feet; Anthony Shostak of Greene on banjo, pipes and didgeridoo; and Alfred Lund of Winthrop on hand drums.

Sitting in with the band on a few numbers will be teen fiddlers Matt Lamare and Hannah Rodrigue of Lewiston, both of whom got their start on fiddle under the direction of Boardman through the city’s public school string music program.

The dance, co-hosted by the Freewill Folk Society of Bates College, will run from 8 to 11 p.m. in the library’s third-floor Callahan Hall. Admission is $5, $2 for students. For more information, call 513-3050.
