FARMINGTON – Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a tree and leaf identification workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

The event is ideal for a family outing, said Rosetta Thompson, district manager. The session is open to anyone over age 10. Youths under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring bug spray, a snack and walking shoes.

The $12 preregistration fee includes a free tree identification book, “Forest Trees of Maine,” published by the Maine Forest Service in 1995. Consulting Forester Amanda Dow-Smith will conduct the session.

Registration forms are available at the district Web site, www.franklincswcd.org. Payment is required in advance. Participants will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the USDA Service Center, 107 Park St. Parking is available in front of the white barn adjacent to the district court.

In addition to learning to identify specific trees by their bark, leaves and color, participants will learn about hardwood products, Christmas tree growth, different trees and bird and wildlife habitats.

To register, contact the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District at 778-4279 or visit the district Web site at www.franklincswcd.org/index10.html.
