STONINGTON (AP) – Lobster lovers got a deal over the weekend in Stonington.

To show its support for the lobster industry, the Penobscot East Resource Center organized an event Sunday where people could buy cooked or live lobsters for $3.50 each on the Stonington fish pier.

The lobster industry is under pressure with low prices and high fuel and bait costs in the midst of the economic slowdown.

Sunday’s event aimed to give support to the local lobster fleet and to send a message to Mainers to support their local fishing communities.

Nearly 5,000 lobsters were sold at the event.
