Minot’s Joey Hunt III, 16, is a senior in high school.
He’s also a world champion, twice over.
Hunt defeated Luca Di Benadetto 117-110 in the final round to capture the gold medal in the Compound Cadet category at the 2008 Youth Archery World Championships in Antalya, Turkey this weekend.
Hunt survived a tough quarterfinal match early in the tournament, winning a three-arrow shootoff against Phillip Gower of Great Britain. In his semifinal, Hunt knocked off Tiftach Swery of New Zealand before facing Di Benedetto in the final.
Hunt also helped his teammates in the same division capture the team gold medal this weekend, setting a new world record in the process.
Hunt joined with Levi Cyr and Connor Kelley as they swept through India, Great Britain and Mexico to capture the gold. They set a new world record with 233 points in their quarterfinal win over India, and matched that total again in the semifinal and final rounds, edging Mexico by eight points in the gold-medal match.
Hunt finished with 78 points out of a possible 80 in the final team match.
