PORTLAND – The Mozart Festival Opera, one of Europe’s most celebrated touring opera companies, will return to Merrill Auditorium Thursday, Oct. 23, with its performance of Mozart’s final operatic masterpiece, “The Magic Flute.”

Accompanied by the renowned Sofia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of Bulgaria, the opera company will present the enchanting opera at 7:30 p.m., courtesy of PCA Great Performances.

“The Magic Flute” is a playful yet profound look at man’s search for love, wisdom, and virtue against all odds. This presentation of the Mozart Festival Opera is rich with mystical symbolism, fantastical characters, glorious arias and folksong-like melodies.

The virtuosic Queen of the Night (Russian soprano Larissa Yudina) and the charming bird catcher Papageno (American baritone Markus Beam) are especially beloved and engaging characters for theatergoers of all ages. The duo is joined by Bulgarian soprano Snejana Dramcheva as Pamina, U.S.-born tenor Benjamin Brecher as Tamino and American bass-baritone William Powers as Sarastro.

Tickets are $53, $46 and $38. They are available through PortTix, the box office at Merrill Auditorium; by calling 842-0800; and at www.pcagreatperformances.org.
