HARRISON – An elderly woman was killed and two people were hurt Thursday afternoon when cars collided near Crystal Lake Park on Route 117.

Police said a Subaru Legacy being driven southbound appeared to have crossed the centerline at about 2:10 p.m. and struck a Chevrolet Equinox traveling in the opposite direction.

The Subaru was driven by an elderly man who had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said. His wife was also pulled from the wreck and was later pronounced dead.

By early Thursday night, Cumberland County Sheriff’s officials were not releasing identities of the victims as the investigation continued and family members were being notified.

Police said the man driving the Subaru was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and later moved to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He suffered internal injuries, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department statement.

The woman driving the Chevrolet was taken to Bridgton Hospital. Police said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police reconstructed the crash site as part of their investigation. By Thursday night, it remained unclear what caused the driver of the Subaru to cross into oncoming traffic.
