FARMINGTON – Senior goalie Sam Purcell made a spectacular diving save in the second overtime to set the stage for a 3-1 Lisbon victory over Mt. Abram on penalty kicks in the MVC girls’ soccer championship game on Saturday.
Stephanie Roy, Tara Metzger and Brooke Lawrence handed the Roadrunners their only loss of the season by notching a penalty kick each for the Greyhounds. Rachel Fullerton secured the only Mt. Abram tally.
Goalie Kenni Norton made four saves for the Mt. Abram, while Purcell recorded 20 turnbacks for Lisbon.
Vinalhaven 3, Buckfield 0
BUCKFIELD – Vinalhaven sailed away with a 3-0 victory over Buckfield in EWC girls’ soccer action during a frosty early morning matchup in Buckfield.
Amelia Davidson, Natalie Reed and Chelsea Guptill collected their treasure of three goals in the first half for the Vikings (5-4-4), and prevented any spillage by playing tough in the second frame.
Carly Carlile made 17 saves for the Bucks (8-2-1), while Dana-Marie Wentworth turned away 16 shots to earn the shutout.
Hebron 2, Gould 1
HEBRON – Emma Leavitt and Julia Jansson Nordin each scored a goal for Hebron in the first period to lead the Lumberjacks to a 2-1 victory over Gould in girls’ soccer action Saturday.
The Huskies (5-3) cut the margin to one late in the second period on a goal by Hilary Reis, but Hebron held on for the win.
Emily Russell recorded 10 saves in goal for the Lumberjacks (3-5), while Carey Hadden had 11 saves in goal for Gould.
Field hockey
Mtn. Valley 3, Telstar 2
FARMINGTON – Shawnee Akers scored on a breakaway in the overtime frame to lift Mtn. Valley to a 3-2 triumph over Telstar in the MVC field hockey championship Saturday.
Telstar, who was the only team to beat the Falcons all season on two ocassions, led 2-1 at the midpoint. TJ Cowin and Kayla Merrill scored the first half tallies for the Rebels.
But, Mtn. Valley forced overtime and Akers was standing alone in the circle when she gained control of the ball and dribbled it downfield and into the cage for a very satisfying win.
Goalie Brianna Douglass made seven saves for Telstar, while Emily Gallant turned away eight for Mtn. Valley.
Holderness 1, Hebron 0
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Charlotte O’Leary found the back of the net on a penalty corner in the second half as Holderness toppled Hebron 1-0 in field hockey action Saturday.
The Lumberjacks (7-2-1) put up a spirited defensive effort, keeping the game a low-scoring affair. Although the Bulls (5-3-2) continued to apply pressure following the goal, the Lumberjack defense held strong while the offense worked to move the ball downfield.
A couple of late charges gave Hebron some hope, but they were unable to score the equalizer before the final buzzer.
