AUGUSTA – Melody Lam never looked back Saturday. But she didn’t have to, because no one was gaining.

Lam probably never heard of Satchel Paige, but she took his famous phrase to heart in winning the Class A individual title at the KVAC Cross Country Championships Saturday.

Brewer captured the team championship by a 60-66 margin over Mt. Blue. The Lewiston boys repeated in cruising past Brunswick by a 60-97 score. Maranacook won the Class B boys race with Medomak Valley, squeaking past Leavitt by a 61-63 tally for the girls’ title.

With Maranacook freshman Abby Mace blistering the field in a time of 19:24 to win the Class B crown, Lam ran her at her own pace. Lam’s time of 20:37 was almost 25 seconds ahead of Mt. Ararat’s Kate Spies.

“Knowing that she was Class B, it really didn’t affect how I ran,” said Lam when asked if she considered trying to keep up with Mace.

“I could hear people cheering for the other runners, but I didn’t want to look back. I knew they were close. I wanted to look back, but I was afraid it would slow me down.”

Mt. Blue coach Kelley Cullenberg wasn’t concerned at all with Lam.

“She’s a tough cookie,” said Cullenberg. “You can throw anything at her. She didn’t get the time she wanted, but in a race like this it’s the place that’s important. What she did, running by her self, says a lot.”

The Cougars placed four runners in the top 13, but lost out to Brewer in the team competition. Michelle Haluska’s third-place finish led the Witches.

On the boys’ side, Lewiston’s win came as no surprise. Robbie Leeman led a tightly packed group of four Blue Devils in the top 11 with his fifth-place finish.

“We were running kind of easy,” said Lewiston coach Ray Putnam. “We did what we wanted to do. We won the race and we got out without any injuries. This is a barometer for next week.”

With next week’s regional race and the state championships on the flatter, faster Belfast course, the Blue Devils have been preparing for the final two events.

“I just wanted to get through today,” said Putnam. “We didn’t train for this course; we’ve been training for Belfast.”

Brunswick’s Will Geoghegan took the top spot in the individual chase with a winning time of 16:44 to hold off Morse’s Jason Kaake (16:53) and Edward Little’s Tyler Gammon (16:57). Geoghegan disappeared into the woods near the half-mile mark with four other runners, including Kaake. When the group came back out, it was Geoghegan at the head of the pack.

“He usually beats me,” said Geoghegan of Kaake. “We ran against each other maybe five or six times this year. At the Festival of Champions race, I beat him. I was hoping to do the same here.”

Sam Seekins of Erskine won the boys’ Class B race in a time of 17:05. Leavitt’s Lauren Turner was the third-place finisher, completing the course in 17:33. The Leavitt girls turned in a solid race with their top five among the first 25 to cross the finish line. Laura Dacyczyn finished fourth to the pace the Hornets.
