YORK – Mountain Valley’s running backs rolled up more than double as many yards as its bus driver logged round-trip miles Friday evening.

Nice night, in other words, considering that the Falcons were nearly as close to Fenway Park as Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Led by unyielding cousins Justin Staires and Matt Laubauskas, Mountain Valley fell only six yards shy of the 500 threshold – averaging more than 10 a pop – in a 47-8 Western Class B rout of York.

“We were disappointed last week that Falmouth was able to stuff the middle against us,” said 295-pound junior Ryan Laubauskas, who cleared cavernous holes for his friends and family from his guard position. “We were pretty determined not to let that happen again.”

Staires rushed a dozen times for a team-high 184 yards and two touchdowns. Laubauskas chalked up 14 carries for 165 yards and three scores.

As usual, the first contact rarely brought them down. Nor did the desperation ankle-grab by the third or fourth York defender to make the final try before one of the two seniors scurried into the end zone.

“Laubauskas and Staires, they’re two pretty tough cats to bring down,” said York coach Randy Small. “It starts up front. If they’re coming 100 mph at your linebackers, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.”

Mountain Valley (8-0) needed almost the entire first quarter to crack the egg on its side of the scoreboard against the feisty Wildcats. Laubauskas unshackled himself from a pair of would-be tackles in a 20-yard TD surge up the gut with 51 seconds remaining.

It was the first of four consecutive Mountain Valley possessions to end in a resounding six. Staires scooted for 28 and 24 to set up an 18-yard Laubauskas ramble that was a virtual instant replay of his first scoring spree with 8:38 left in the half.

Back-to-back York drives ended in Travis Ruff interceptions and paved the Falcons’ parade through the trenches to a 29-0 lead. The featured backs traded roles on the third scoring series, with Laubauskas’ 39-yard blast off right tackle softening the middle for Staires’ 3-yard rush.

Staires scored again from 7 yards out before the half. Later, he gashed the secondary for 38 more, leading to Laubauskas’ 4-yard TD plunge on the fourth play from scrimmage in the third quarter.

“We wanted to get Staires and Laubauskas going, because we think they’re a pretty good matchup,” said Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward. “I know I couldn’t have tackled either one of them when I was in high school. I would have hit the ground and hoped that they tripped on me.”

The 220-pound Staires and the elder Laubauskas – a svelte 225 next to his brother – also provided the defensive punch along with Cole Clark, Ruff and Matt Duka.

York (5-3) didn’t score until the Falcons’ second and third string was a regular part of the rotation. It was already 41-0 by then, courtesy of Tom Puiia’s 1-yard TD in the final minute of the third quarter.

Sophomore Brad Stephens (eight carries, 51 yards) doused the shutout on a 10-yard run with 9:03 to play. Taylor Bradley answered with a 33-yard TD scamper for the Falcons.

Mountain Valley and Cape Elizabeth will meet on Halloween in Rumford with the Campbell Conference regular-season title and playoff home field advantage on the line. It is the third consecutive year the teams will enter the clash undefeated.

“I think we’re ready for next week,” said Clark. “Most of us are pretty fired up for that.”
